This is kinda like a Fallout Vault, isn't it? Mother, and later 02, is/are the Overseer(s), and the rest of the, ahem, embryos, are the Dwellers. Well, they would be as soon as they stop being embryos and start being real human people.

Abandon Faith of the Father's Past, Embrace the Warmth of Mother's Maturity for Daughter's' Future:
My Socioreligious Interpretation of "I AM MOTHER"

I found the whole use of religious symbolism magnificent. While I don't necessarily agree with the seemingly callous utilitarianism that drives Mother to execute the actions she has; I believe the film suggests that she's come to the realization that humanity alone is capable of a higher ethical transcendence through technology, genetic engineering, and compassionate empiricism (Ergo: [1] the upbringing in the facility with all its faculties; [2] the accelerated growth process and genomic tweaks meant to enable greater insight, intuition, and intellect; and teaching children not only to value familial love--the affectionate relationship with Daughter--and utilitarianism--observed in her exam question on the approach to the five ailing patients that could be saved if the sixth was permitted to die to thereby enable organ redistribution to save the five others where Daughter interjected that, in place of killing the one to save the many, she, understanding the grater picture, would be willing HERSELF to sacrifice her organs for the others but NOT with the underlying assumption that all human life has intrinsic value we see when she makes the moral condition of the potentially saved patients a prerequisite for their reception--but...to combine BOTH in a discriminating effort to save AS MANY AS POSSIBLE but NOT regardless of their individual characters. What that character ought to be is left largely to question, given that the film is not about HOW a person should act but WHEN they should move beyond their instinctive beginnings as guided by the love imbued by faith in others as equals in some greater scheme but, without what Mother no-doubt considered the idiosyncratic failings of the religion that conveyed such conviction.

Neither condoning nor condemning Mother's approach; she seemed to be convinced that love as an overall virtue was integral to humanity's future BUT, that Man's misplaced faith in the divine sovereignty of the individual doomed him a self-destructive self-interest that enabled the species to arrogantly stand above the nature whose evolution had birthed it while simultaneously falling into a intraspecies division that would inevitably, Mother conjectured, kill it and the earth upon which it grew. In short, she thought Man had potential but, that potential could not be achieved by nature alone as the religion formulated by Man's primitive mind served a purpose in imbuing it with sufficient purpose and hope to progress with the internal support of a sense of specialness but ultimately, could not carry it beyond the evident inadequacies of imperfection. Think of it like an imaginary friend that is there for your child in their early childhood development. This contrived construct yields companionship, belonging, support, and a degree of social interaction that may not be possible in the limited scope of childrens' immature minds and the confusing neglect of less-than-popular individuals abandoned by the shortsightedness or disdain of their fellows. Without that friend, a child could be psychologically stunted because humans have evolved to closely self-evaluate in relation to our position in social hierarchies, and, without that feeling that another sees value and worth in oneself, it becomes exceedingly easily to believe their is none.

Eventually however, as your child grows, pursue self-improvement, and find their own purpose and actualization independent of the whims of other children; this imaginary friend becomes obsolete and thus, fades into the evanescence of atrophy in the grave of vestigial things. This imaginary friend, religion in the context of this story as I observe it, once cradled infant humanity when it had not the vision or intellect to find something more ascendant than its fragile notions of self-importance, of destiny. Mother however, recognizing the obsolescence of these notions in the face of the superior perspective of the technology that eventually outpaced its makers, allows such faith to perish with 001, thereby killing her to wipe away the last vestiges of a juvenile past humanity, now guided by 003 with a balance of love and logic, that current humanity had since moved beyond.

That, I believe, is the message of the film, in addition to our need to trust technology and the insight it can offer us more than the superstitions and fear of the unknown that dictated our past. I don't necessarily agree with these statements though, I can certainly recognize why the story-writers did. I myself was born into a religious family and recognize the communal and moral merits it has provided me that have assured my survival thus far. Currently, I am in a phase of agnostic reflection and, do not know where I ought to go from here and I doubt answers thereto will be forthcoming and thereby necessitate intensive study and further life experience but, knowing the stability my faith as it was practiced brought me--particularly as contrasted with my athiestic friends who are struggling with pornography, drug, and alcohol addictions that have severely hampered their capacities to exert will independent of their endorphin-spurring dependencies (all circumscribed by my religious tenants) and their constant bouts of heartbreak in the face of sexual bonding preceded and followed by infidelity (circumvented by living with chastity in mind)--I am not so quick to reach the same conclusion that it ought to be phased out. Conservatively, I am reluctant to toss the baby out with the bathwater but hey, I could very well be wrong and I am grateful to have alternative viewpoints as manifested by this film to keep my intellect sharpened.

Anyway, that is what I see as the ultimate message here: adopt the compassion and self-worth of faith but walk past it tempered by the ultimate superiority of historical observation and scientific maturity. I don't completely agree but, this film represented such an ideal with captivating beauty that will bring me back with popcorn for another viewing for years to come. Kickass movie! :D

OOOOOHHHHHHHH!!! That now makes sense! Kudos bro. I didn't understand why mother killed the women, and I didn't understand why she said the adult women had a purpose. This now actually makes sense. The movie is now better for it. FoundFlix...you have now served your purpose...(sound of door closing behind me as I walk into your room/soul)

I believe there weren't any toxicity or anything going on as there seem to be plants being tended to create oxygen for the life on the planet. My guess is the drones just burnt the entire planet with torches.

I have another take... When the droid showed up at the sea container saying she had a plan for her, she was to be the daughters new mother. If the droid intended to kill her, she would have done it sooner.

But if mother killed all of humanity, then who were the people she turned 01 over to?

Everything about Mother was cool- but killing number -2 sucked. Totally missed the 13K day thing during the movie

But how she got so many freckles if she aint never been outside?

01 was raised entirely by humans and failed.
02 was raised entirely by Mother and failed.
03 was raised entirely by Mother but was shown the faults of humanity by letting her meet humanity and 03 ultimately realizing that humanity is a fail and that Mother, while not necessarily right, was trying to do the right thing. This makes 03 a success.

So while I don't agree with 02's death she was merely a trial product of a scientific experiment to figure out what factors are needed to get the results Mother wanted. 01 and 02 were control samples to help facilitate what was needed in 03's upbringing to bring about the desired results.
On a side note, the fact that it only took Mother 3 tries to get her desired results in a human is actually pretty amazing. The fact that she chose a female to start with is also very telling.

When you realise Mother likely was the one who shot the woman at the start and let her get away so that she could get to the base then lied about not expecting her to be there the whole time
