I was pre med in college back on the 90s and got scared of the MCAT bc I did not so well on the GRE and thought I couldnt do it. Went in to teaching. Did not feel right. Went in to nursing school and found my love of medicine again. RN for 10 years then went to NP school at 34. I have been an NP for 3 years and I am thinking of going for that MD or DO and I am 39.

That amazingly wonderful man Dr. Mike is interviewing is the best Doctor I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Dr. Espina is a great man and a great friend. I am lucky to call him friend, family and one of the few people that hold a piece of my heart.

Hey Doctor Mike, did you ever have a module on nonverbal communication in medical school?

Second comment, sorry. Could you use your biomedical engineering degree as a pre med program? I took a ton of life science classes.

I started medical school at 38! I blended well with the students and they were always surprised to know that I was older than them and that I had two grown children. I have been lucky to never experienced ageism, at least not yet. Having said that, I don’t regret my decision to follow my dream. This had been my dream since I was 16 yo and life got in the way and delayed it more than I wanted it. In the end, I would not have been the person that I am today without the wonderful and not so wonderful experiences that I had prior to medical school. I am currently a resident and I bring to my program patience, communication, empathy, encouragement, responsibiity, and a strong worth ethic. This I bring not only to my patients but to my class who I support and encourage through their journey.

This popped up on my feed today. I was 38 when I started med school. I’m about to turn 40 knee deep in my second year. I am already married, own a home, and have a family so it does take a tremendous sacrifice from everyone and I had to move 3 hours away during the week to attend. Healthcare is in my blood and I am determined to fight for the underdogs after a physician who did it for the wrong reasons caused the death of my mother through neglect and mismanagement. I get tired and can’t memorize things as well, but I get comments about my empathy and compassion. Those are things you can’t teach, no matter how smart these kids are. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re too old to do anything. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed for even the youngest person, so do what you love today.

Hi I am 37 , 38 next year if I start med school I’ll be 39 ... how is it? Are you happy and how hard is it doing medicine with a family and older?

This was a great interview but an uncomfortable setup. In the future please sit across from the person you are interviewing.

Dr Mike I envy you such a good, positive attitude. Greetings from Poland 🤪

Oh my goodness, I need to find people like you in my medical school! Sometimes it feels like everyone at my uni is afraid to dive deeper into these beautiful philosophical conversations since it ''wont help them get a better grade''. How do I find more likeminded individuals?!

That dr Mike is so selfcentered .

I could be wrong, but if your wife doesn't say ANYTHING to you when you complete such a long journey then I feel like that's a pretty big red flag haha. like she's definitely hiding something that's on her mind.

Would it be ok to pursue a medical career while having ocular issues aka not seeing very well?

I want to be dr. Espina's patient, and I'm a doctor myself
