There’s still nothing in our constitution that explicitly prohibits sex discrimination. John Oliver talks about how to fix that.

I’ve heard the name Phyllis Schlafly before but now I know she sucks!

John Oliver truly is slime. I watched Oliver's interview on the Breakfast Club after his panel with Dustin Hoffman. It was very telling of his motives and viewpoint. If he were interested in getting at the truth, he would have spoken of Hoffman as an equal participant. Someone who had an uncomfortable interaction with a woman, may have a different view on it, and either learned something, changed in some way, or grew deeper in his beliefs about womem.
Instead, Oliver can barely mention Dustin Hoffman's name. When he is asked, "did he know the questions were coming?", Oliver looks surprised, "i dont know", as if any knowledge or concern of Hoffman's state of mind was beyond his care or knowledge.

This is a sociopath. Hoffman was a momentary vehicle for Oliver's advancement. Whispering the word "evil" might even be appropriate, but I don't know the man's character.

How is it illegal in my state to discriminate based on Sex but it's totally legal for a woman to pay more for car insurance because they're a woman? Am I missing something?

Nah! Woman is lower than a black man and lower than a old perverted crazy con man. No woman for president

catharine mackinnon writes a piece on "difference and domination" and how equal treatment under the law can sometimes hurt women because they experience inequality in so many other aspects of life. For example in cases of custody men can often look like the better guardian because they have a higher income. That higher income could be due to sex discrimination in the work force. It just goes to show how much more needs to be fixed after a law like this is passed, but it makes me hopeful that the government is having these discussions about equality.

The ERA is definitely needed and important, but I want to know if this amendment includes trans, non-binary, and intersex people, cos they should be treated equally as well. Wouldn't it make sense for the amendment to include sex AND gender (since they're two different things) and have some phrasing that explicitly includes them?

Nah, Arizona has TheOdd1sOut and Jaiden Animations. Screw the Grand Canyon

you could have done this better and actually addressed all the issues that have been centered around the ERA and the VAWA in the past couple of months. and all the issues that are centered around the linguistic confusion between gender and sex. literally half-assed considering the depth you go into with other topics. like thanks for trying to help, I guess, but I just saw a woman get harassed for talking about menstruation. like, this is seriously the mentality nowadays. I honestly don't think people care enough about biological women to consider them as actual human beings as opposed to merely being viewed as objects for the fulfillment of male desire. like, a woman can never be defined on her own and always has to be defined in relation to men.

The ERA is responsible for the parent trap.

"Opponents of the ERA focused on traditional gender roles, such as how men do the fighting in wartime. They argued that the amendment would guarantee the possibility that women would be subject to conscription and be required to have military combat roles in future wars if it were passed. They appealed to married women by stressing that the amendment would invalidate protective laws such as alimony and eliminate the tendency for mothers to obtain custody over their children in divorce cases.[97]" < so guys and mens rights activists and equalists should love this amendment, then

Turns out that newly fresh born states have more modern laws ... gender equality is long understood... you probably will never come to understanding of social equality...

Looking for respectful discussion/responses:

I'm not a very political individual, and just ran into the ERA through this video. Like the 80%, I thought gender equality was already codified as an amendment. I want to educate myself on the matter (which of course involves researching the issue and taking in an array of opinions). I ran into this comment by Phyllis Schalfly, which actually seemed plausible to me: "The amendment would require women to be drafted into military combat any time men were conscripted. [It] would abolish the presumption that the husband should support his wife and take away Social Security benefits for wives and widows. It would also give federal courts and the federal government enormous new powers to reinterpret every law that makes a distinction based on gender, such as those related to marriage, divorce, and alimony."

I am not familiar with the details of the laws surrounding Social Security benefits for widows or alimony (having not experienced any of those situations myself), but do you think any laws regarding the military draft, Social Security, or alimony would change? I ask this respectfully, understanding that changes in these areas could be perceived as good, bad, or neutral.

I support the idea of codifying equality across genders, but I guess I'm curious about what y'all think the cascading effects of this amendment could be.

Change those 24 words from "sex" to "integral and immutable characteristics" and you have my support.

America, the best place in the world for women, called "a bit rough". LMAO. How about you try syria or saudi arabia, or north koria, or china, or south america.

>the best place in the world for women

lol there's a particular parochialism that comes from living within a hegemon.

All well and good, until the wage gap fallacy came up; in the USA it is an earnings gap, when time and experience are added to the equation, as well as the type of job, women, on average, earn just over %1 more than their male counterpart with equal qualifications

I wonder why the people who dislike this video are thinking...

Very sad thoughts I'd imagine.

It's another one of these episodes where you say something about America and the rest of the world is "How the fuck you didn't get to cover it so far?!"

Living in middle Europe we always looked up to America and we still do (as a country and as a people) and in times like this I definitely wonder why...
