Today I extend my thoughts on a comment I made previously in my "Best of Anime 2018" video about the lack of modern classic Anime, since non of you could agree on it in the comments section.

Berserk can not be considered a classic since the story has not yet been completed!

Dammit I hate to admit it but Sword Art Online might just fit the classic description. Love it or Hate it, it did spark a movement. Just about anybody has an opinion on it, and it is re-watchable. Sure many shows has done better but they came after a core concept of being trapped in a video game.

Ero-manga sensei may also fit under this. It is an anime you will never forget. Hell I can't stop giggling at the idea of it being a classic but man it is the first thing I am reminded of when I discover I am watching a deeply fan-servicey trash anime. I'm like " Yes this is certainly trash, but is it ero-manga sensei levels of trash?"

Jojo is not even a contest. I know so many damn jojo memes, I have never seen the damn thing and it is on my watchlist. At this point I feel like I know the plot of it or can guess it with 78% accuracy.

Attack on Titian also could fit as well, it too lit the anime culture world on fire and is still being memed. However I'm just not sure if it will check out in the future.

Made in Abyss, I feel many want it to be but it's just not. Completely forgot about it until I saw the comments. I can't shake the feeling I've seen what it brings before. (maybe because I have played etrian odyssey games and the plot is more or less the same, just swap out "find mom" for "explore and map out this entire place. ) Honestly feels like the anime version of "Oscar bait".

Mob psycho 100 2 was really damn good but I would argue it's not the anime that is the classic but the author "ONE" whole themes in both his works that brings the classic feel. One Punch Man and Mob are just so unique and have a different message rarely told that just makes them stand out.

whats the anime at 6:57?

The term you're looking for is oversaturation.

I'd raise the case that one punch man season 1 has classic anime potential, unfortunately season 2 is shaping up to be hot garbage...

I think that it's really Hard for new animes, movies or series being a "classic" is that before there wasn't alot of really Great shows or movies but now there are soooo many good shows/movies that there aren't really anything that is so good that it will stay like all other classic animes/movies and shows

Please do anime in mins again!! Love that series and jokes especially the tokyo ghoul one

Nowadays I'd rather read manga.

It would be so great if you could please post the music used in your video down in the description. The music you use sounds absolutely fantastic!

In this Corner of the World..😢

Another point I'd like to throw in is Nostalgia. Obviously, a large group of people can remember a show being good, even if it's really pretty sub par or bad, and these shows can also be classified as classics.

What about hi-score girl?

I absolutely feel this sentiment with my friends and family who are new to anime. It is impossible to get them to watch Gurren Lagan, cowboy bebop, FLCL or Big O which are a handful of my favorite. I finally got one of my friends to sit down and watch Samurai Champloo with me and it has been the golden apple on my sweet little anime n00b tree.

So what you're saying is...
All that glitters is gold, only shooting stars break the mold.

You make a very good point, I just don't think its nearly as big a deal as you're making it out to be.

The problem with viewing classics this way is that staying power isn't discernible *in the moment*. Looking at classics of literature and art, there are tons of works that were obscure during their day that we now hold up as masterpieces and "classics". Alternatively, there are many bestselling, popular works of past generations - the "Sword Art Online" of their day, if you will - that are more or less forgotten now as trends moved past them. We only remember the best art, or the art that later generations found the most value in. Everything else falls by the wayside.

However, I do agree that people shouldn't focus on seasonal shows so much. It's why I don't participate in the anime community much, because I'm usually watching shows a bit behind and trying to catch up on classic shows.

I think one piece would be a classic if it was animated and produced by literally anyone else. For the same reasons the legend of the galactic heros is.

This video is VERY much appreciated.
Thank you.

How can you possibly hate a girl like Chika?

I think the fact that there was less competition makes it harder to declare something as a classic

Long-form episodic classics can only truly be ascertained when their tuns are over/completed and as such the whole body of work can be evaluated, appreciated. Most current shows can’t given many are still ongoing, so they may be great but the jury is still out on whether they truly end up as “timeless generation defining” classics. Anime, tv shows, larger episodic film works, I think it applies.

Let's make a game. Vaguely describe an old anime, see if anyone can guess it.
"A bunch of teenagers whine about pacifism, try to kill themselves and keep failing, so they go on mass killing sprees instead."

Watch Giant Gorg.

If studio with can adapt AOT to the end while closely working with the mangaka, it could go down as a classic

So many many made in abyss comments over here. I dunno man, it was ok.
Was so hyoed when it was anime of the year for 2017 but when I actually watched it, was kinda disappointed in the end.

I think you're experiencing these feelings because your job entails you watching an infinite amount of anime. I can think of at least 5 series from the past 3 years that are going to stick with me for the rest of my life.

p.s. why the FUCK do you anime journalists care so much about what the community is talking about? Popularity is meaningless, and focusing on it makes your criticism boooooring.
