man it’s a shame to see you under utilizing professional audio tools. ditching the UA because it wasn’t sleek enough for your desk, using Dynaudio LYD48’s as tv speakers. it’s a shame that there are working professionals and struggling artists out there who could put those tools to their intended use. i would love a pair of LYD48’s.

MonitorControl Free! Is for those who don't require all the bells and whistles and only want to manage volume and brightness in external monitors connected via HDMI or DP using the standard Mac keys.

I am using The app and it is great.

Hey Jonathan - thanks for recommending sound source. Really dumb how Mac OS just doesn't let you adjust the volume on USB connected speakers. Downloaded Soundsource and it resolved a very old problem I had with the Mac!

need control on volume ??? spend $30!
wow!!
so apple gets royalty from the utility sellers ... thats why they dont fix it...

I think it'd be awesome for you to deep dive into audio. Those iLouds are really good, but the larger ones definitely aren't as competitive as the micros. If you did a clean setup involving a nice pair of passive bookshelves with a solid amp and DAC I think that'd make for an awesome video.

Make an effort to look for bang for buck products too! Could be really interesting. For $700-800 (the price of the iLoud MTMs) you could get a Topping PA3 and D30 amp/DAC combo with a pair of Klipsch RP600ms.

Or on the high end a pair of KEF LS50s.

I just purchased a Behringer UMC202HD Audio Interface for my active monitors and it allows me to use the Function keys for volume up and down. (: in case someone was looking for an interface to purchase that does work.

The reason macOS does this is by design - it's what keeps noobs from ruining the sound quality unless the DAC itself as a analog volume attenuator like Dragonfly Black from Audioquest. It's how pro-audio works, Jon. But awesome to see your journey through it, and that app is something I am going to check out...

There ARE many DACs that do let you adjust the volume via Media Keys, but if they have a 'unified straight' audio source from your Mac, yeah it'll do that ** - Same with Optical out. Simply the only way to get the best sound quality out however as CHANGING the volume is what attenuates the deltas - highs and lows - and believe it or not ruins the sound quality.

Babyface Pro has volume and works like a charm, stop sponsoring BS products. Lame channel to be honest

Dang that just got me so hyped to learn more about audio. Awesome vid you inspired me!!

Where’s the 49 inch monitor

A free alternative if you just need volume control without all fancy things, I'm using Menubus free app (discontinued but still downloadable) and my Lynx Hilo, just route the output on Menubus to your audio interface so you can use your volume control on my Macbook Pro to control the volume, the Menubus Pro (unfortunately not for sale anymore) has more options for multiple output device

Hey what keyboard is that? looks like a great setup!

Set the thumb wheel control on your mouse to volume, worked for me for years...

Maybe stop using a shitty Mac?

Hi Jonathan. Why not using the Dragonfly and a 3.5mm -> two mono 6.3 XLR cable for the speakers? I presume, it is simpler than all the other solutions you mentioned, and way cheaper too.

My setup has a $1000 monitor stand

Isn’t having expensive speakers for at least two years normal?

Haha very true, I've had £70 Creative Speakers for more than 4 years now.

You could make a hole in the table that the macbook lays flush with the table surface

BETTER OPTION: Try "Sound Control by Static Z Software". I've had the same issue with the grey volume of death, but Sound Control lets you use the one cable setup, AND uses the same volume interface that the Mac uses when changing the volume. The "free trial" is for the premium features on the utility, but if you just need volume keys working, it's totally free. Lightweight, easy install, etc. Highly recommend.

Yo Jonathan, in the future try RME hardware. They may not have the marketing prowess of UA, Focusrite, or Apogee.... but they make the best drivers (super stable & incredibly low latency) & internal bussing (control audio volume with keyboard & even EQ your MAINS to tune them to your room) in the game. I own a Babyface Pro and it is outstanding. Awesome video as always 👍🏽

Why don't you use Soundflower, It lets you use your volume keyboard keys with any kind of audio output. Its a lightweight and easy to use. Been using it from last two years never faced a problem controlling audio on Display port from keyboard volume keys.

hey Jonathan I was already set to buy SoundSource but I remembered one mac equalizer called 'eqMac2' and it works like a champ with the Schiit Modi :)

Hey man true story, you should edit your audio on the lowest quality speakers you have. If it sounds good on those, it will sound good on the expensive crap. Plus most of your audience isn’t going to have the high end stuff. Unless you’re doing hollywood stuff, then maybe. I’m just saying you put all that effort on making it sound good and pay a huge amount of attention to detail on the audio and then realize your audience can’t even hear the work you did because they don’t have the good speakers 🔊... sad day.
