Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark takes some of the classic urban legends from the original trilogy of books by Alvin Schwartz (Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones and combines them into one cohesive narrative.

There are a few obvious references to monsters adapted from the original series, like Harold the Scarecrow, The Pale Lady from The Dream and Me Tie Doughty Walker. But what about some of the more covert references? In this video I'll be going over Everything You Might Have Missed from the books, as well as my idea on how a sequel was promised from the very beginning as well as other clever foreshadowings you might have overlooked in the film.

--About Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark--
It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind...but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.

--About Things You Missed--

CORRECTIONS

The audio books are not narrated by "some old guy," but George S. Irving (for those who are wondering).

In the movie, we see the "possessed" dog lightly growl/barking, "Me tie dough-ty walker". The Gangly (¿Gangling?) Man doesn't say that phrase till he comes through the chimney. I don't believe anyone utters the phrase "Lynchee kinchy colly molly dingo dingo" in call-and-response form movie, as it occurs in the book.

In the movie, they combine the story of Me Tie Dough-ty Walker with the story immediately preceding it in the 1st book, What Do You Come For? : in which, a lonely, old woman wishes for company. In response, body parts fall from the chimney and assemble themselves, similar to the event in the movie.

One more thing to mention: as should be evident, the design for the ghost for the "Big Toe" segment of the movie was inspired by the artwork for The Haunted House_; in the book, the ghost of _The Big Toe was given no description, just intimidating dialogue.

The lines about worms and pinochle were quoted in an episode of "Northern Exposure," back in the early '90s... I never knew where the reference came from...

Did anybody else's theatre flash their lights during this movie?

I thought that this movie would be like all the people who bullied Stella were the ones getting what they deserved, but I actually really liked all the characters! I really want a sequel!

When they are at the hospital, you can clearly hear a nurse calling a "Doctor Kauffman" it may be a reference to Silent Hill, as it was repeated twice. Giving del Toro's history with the franchise, It may be an intentional wink to the character of the first game.

I went to see this movie this morning and was surprised because I was literally the only person in the theater which was pretty scary. Tbh I was disappointed that the dog didn’t actually say “lynchee kinchy colly molly dingo dingo”. And I agree it should have been a series not a movie.

I used to take these books out from the library constantly. I got my hands on the books so I own them now and I shared them with my little sister and she loves them too. I liked the movie, but it didn't quite reach my expectations. I think I should lower my expectations more often xD

Search up scary stories to tell in the dark parents guide, and you’ll see what the 4 girls were doing

You missed that the Jangly Man is also from the story "What Do You Come For?". All the parts of a dead man fall down the chimney and assemble themselves in that one. He also looks suspiciously like the infamous grinning head from the cover of the first book in some scenes.
You see a wheelchair in the hospital, possibly referencing an illustration from the beginning of the first book.
Teenagers going into a haunted house associated with missing kids, and then all dying one by one, is reminiscent of "The Curse."
When Ruth runs across the stage at her school, you see a bunch of chairs laid out in a row, like a probably not as memorable, but still particularly creepy illustration from the Notes and Sources section of the third book.

I was really excited for this movie but it really didn’t live up to the hype. I loved those booms growing up and honestly I wanted more from the books in the movie. We got 4 mostly developed stories and that’s it. The effects were amazing I just think they should have cut the story down. Because really who went to see that movie and didn’t see it to have some sort of nostalgia? I don’t care about any of those kids I just want those stories adapted on screen
