Unpopular opinion: I preferred the remake to the original. I enjoyed the more serious tone that they went for and I liked the fact that they removed a lot of the silliness from it. I'm looking at you hula dance and lovely bunch of coconuts. Some might find moments like that funny but I found them jarring and cringey. I liked how they gave the hyena's a bit more of a backstory with their leader and how they operate. Same goes with Scar although they could have done more than elude to Scar and Mufasa's history.

I thought the characters were utilized more and voice acted better for the most part. I preffered Chiwetel to Irons only because Iron's played him more like a cheesy 50's villain where as Chiwetel gave it a much more sinister approach. I liked how Zazu wasn't just a silly sidekick. He actually risks his life multiple times for the good of the pride lands. Saving both Simba and Nala quite a few times. Donald Glover made a great SImba although it felt jarring at first. His voice is at a higher pitch which makes it hard to imagine coming out of the mouth of a Lion but I got used to it after a while. He emoted far better than deadpan Broderick ever did. The child actors fell incredibly flat for me however. I couldn't get behind what they were saying.

Overall the only real thing that stops this from being a great movie is the animation. I don't know why Jon Favreau went with such a hyperrealistic look. It's incredibly off putting to hear Simba mourn the death of his father but his facial expression doesn't change. I wish they had stuck with the look of 2016's Jungle Book which had realistic animation but still allowed the characters to emote. If not this then at least have the Lions move their eyes in response to what's happening.

I appreciate the facty that Chris was trying really hard not to spoil a movie that came out more than 20 years ago.

Only four remakes have been positive or critically accaim score by critics:
1. The Jungle Book - 95%
2. Cinderella - 83%
3. Beauty & The Beast - 72%
4. Mary Poppins - 78%

You know what live action remake Disney should make? Atlantis. So underrated and would definitely be sick with live action and CGI.

If they would've made a Lion King movie that differs a lot from the original, the amount of critism would be insane compared to the amount of people saying they should have done something else

At least this version passes the bechdel test *just *

Every movie remake is a cash grab. Every single one. That's not cynical; that's the god-honest truth.

Hears the same stoner muppet voice Seth always does

i found it so uncomfortable to watch in terms of the screenwriting and humour, also i just wasnt sold on young simba's voice

A shame that they didn't go the direction of the jungle book, and used the chance to tell a slightly more mature story. Heck, maybe actually make it have ANYTHING to do with Hamlet, since they like parading the lie that it is an adaptation of a play it has nothing in common with?!

Of course, i guess people wouldn't take kindly to Simba's mother helping kill mufasa, nala comitting suicide because simba doesn't want anything to do with her, Simba killing timone and Pumba after they agree to betray simba to scar, Simba dying, Simba pretending to be mad for the ENTIRE STORY, Mufasa not giving a damn about who rules as long as he gets avenged, Another lion pack invading and the inner fighting allowing them to take pride rock unopposed.....you know, all the stuff that is ACTUALLY in Hamlet XD

Frankly, a more mature and interesting version of the story could have been interesting, you could even force simba into a situation where their fight over the throne is the reason why the pridelands go to heck. Maybe make Scar a fairly competent king, thus raising the dilemma of whether Simba is wrong to put his personal revenge over the greater good, even if the king did murder his way to the throne, you know anything to add to the story.

I hope they don't do this to Bambi

No remake for Bambi. Leave it be.

I think with this movie you hit the nail on the head. Favereau couldn’t do any changes his hands were most likely tied. I guess that’s the point, to prove that it could be done. In terms of the story i can’t see how a movie that’s so loved can get so much distaste from reviewers? Granted I haven’t seen it yet, keen as to. But let’s be honest, I’m keen for this even more now that I know that it hasn’t been altered....much.

I agree with everything that you are saying about this lion king film

Watched today in my cinema as I work there and we did a team showing and I have to say it’s not a disappointment the only thing I have to complain about is timone I don’t like his new voice and personality apart from that it’s fantastic it’s all the same magic as the original with a few extra scenes along the way

1:40 I disagree, just because the movie looks realistic doesn't mean that it looks beautiful

I totally agree, no expressions no emotions they try too hard to make it real psssh wont bother watch it unless to grade it. Looks more like something on nat geo

As long as the visual effects, characters, and story is good then I'm watching it!

I thought it was great and this is coming from someone that has seen the original dozens of times and the stage play. It was what I expected, a remake. For the record, I didn't care much for The Jungle Book.

decent review, but i think its cool, that they remade this movie in "live action" to get another perspective on a big time classic, and is def cool that he didnt change up the movie, the die hards will love seeing the movie again,in this format, and the new fans will be amazed and would def want to see the original version, bring in yet a bigger audience,so its def a win win,for everybody involved fans and disney
