That pasta is the least italian thing I've seen. We don't put pesto on other ingredients.
Pasta al pesto is literally boiled pasta with pesto. Cook the pasta, kill the heat, drain it, reserve some pasta water, into the bowl it goes, pesto, into the bowl it goes, some pasta water inside the bowl, toss to combine, serve.
