Thanks for a terrific 2 years everyone. I'm releasing this video as part of the celebration, it was one of the first videos I ever made almost 2 years ago so please be kind. It profiles the fight between HD DVDs and Blu-rays in their attempt to become the primary media format.

Paramount was paid 100 million by Toshiba in 2007 to go HdDvd exclusive. In 2008, Bluray disc association paid Warners 500 Million! Warners/Newline was the big one for me because they have a bigger classic catalog and traditionally have the best extras next to Criterion and other specialty houses. Sadly as we got to the 2010s- they got lazy with special features and even their menus are very basic

10:35 DVDs are by no means the more popular medium, even by 2017 standards. I've been pondering for years why blu ray movies also continue to come with DVDs most often. Even by 2017, DVD players and movies were harder to come by at retail stores than blu ray players. That might have something to do with the dramatic decrease in blu ray player/disc costs over the years, as well as the fact that players are backwards compatible with DVDs. Now with the advent of 4K blu ray, they come with standard blu ray discs. It's just a way to help people transition into the next format, but it gets to a point when it's a waste of money. DVDs have had their day for the most part

Hey, thank you so much for making it this far down in the comments. Seriously, it means so much to me that you're reading this.

I found an old copy of Mystery Men on HD recently

I worked at Best Buy in the Home Theater department when the war went on. I remember when they finally announced that Toshiba would no longer sell HD DVD Players, they went from hundreds of dollars down to 50 or 40 dollars or so. Owning one wasnt a complete loss back then since they also upconverted regular dvds (as in stretched them out to make it look HD and then tried to fill in the gaps).

Ha! Blu-ray? More like Blu-rry!

Blu-Ray got the 6 infinity stones first

I remember last year my mother bought a used HD DVD. We don't own a player, nor did we ever. I had to remind her about the format wars. She had completely forgotten. I got her the movie on Blu Ray (we do have a Blu Ray player) for mother's day.

I've never seen or heard of a HD DVD before, not even a clear red case (apart from a red GameCube case). I remember seeing Blu-ray DVDs when growing up in the United Kingdom, mostly with the PS3 video games than films. I thought that the Blu-ray films where only used for the PS3. I think it's great that we still have DVDs physically as it does a great job that is used universally on most of the modern video game consoles like the PS4, Xbox One and the two previous generation consoles. I hope that the future of the consoles will continue to support DVDs and Blu-rays as digital content is becoming more of a main feature.

Also, man I feel sad for Toshiba, their a pretty good company but just all that money that went into hd-dvd and then on top of that they went all in on SED-tv which led no where, hehe thats gotta be rough

Wasn't part of the extra expense of Blu-ray the extra security? I thought that was also part of the battle because it was an inconvenience to the customer who would have to keep their players up-to-date to handle the security, but the studios liked the idea that it would be harder to copy disks. Plus, it's probably a difficult subject to approach, but wasn't the porn industries backing of Blu-ray also a nail in the coffin of HD DVD?

Every time I watch one of your videos you skip the things that stood out to me the most...

Another viewpoint about the was it worth the price 600usd for a ps3. True it was stupid expensive at the time. But i think just like some went over to xbox some people turned to the ps3 just because of the bluray player. I had friends who bought it who saw it more as a cheap blue-ray player with a console than an expensive console with bluray support. Keep in mind that bluray players were fairly new at the time and really expensive. There might have been 1 or 2 bd players who were prob missing some features that could have been cheaper but other than that the ps3 was the cheapest bd player at the time. Not counting bd-rom for pcs. I Also think the appeal of the bluray player might have been slightly higher outside the u.s. While americans enjoyed hdtv transmissions for many years before bluray we got jack squat in the rest of the world. I belive we had one premium pay movie channel that transmitted hdtv and then nothing. So alot of people at the time had bought hdtv and owned for several years but never actually seen any hdtv material until they purchased a bluray player.

Cool vid! Yeah i remember participating in some pretty heated discussions during the format war. I was personally rooting for bluray because of the larger storage capacity per layer, it felt more like real next gen tech compared to hd-dvds meek 15gb. But there were alot ot people rooting for hd-dvd, it felt like the majority. I honestly thought hd-dvd was gonna come out on top for a while or that we were gonna get stuck with 2 formats operating side bt side. They did both release movies for quite some time.

This 2 year old video has better quality than your current videos! You need to step up your game and be as good as you used to be!

If one console had both, I'd get it. Just wait for the Xbox 2 and ps5 I guess...

My PC has a CD/DVD Burner that can read blu-ray and HD DVD

HD-DVD Vs Blu-ray. Who won? Digital streaming!

HD-DVD was way better for the consumer. It used the same material as DVD's and a factory could take about an hour to convert the existing equipment to HD-DVD. Blu-Ray on the other hand, required an entire new assembly line and used a propitiatory material made only by Sony. Sony wanted movies priced at $50 each. The only reason that did not happen is HD-DVD priced it at $30-35

Have you forgotten Laser-disc? It was the competition for DVD.

Laserdisc only competed with DVD in its last days, they actually competed with VHS for most of its life

only the hddvd was sophisticated from start and was clearly superior in terms of authoring-stuff (until the BD Profile 2.0 came around at 2008)

Could have mentioned Blu-ray didn't support picture-in-picture feature which HD-DVD did.

again, the inferior format "won"

Someone gave me a Toshiba A35 for free a few years back. He Never used it. Video and audio quality right on par with blu-ray. I honestly can't tell a difference. If you find dirt cheap player pick it up. You can find discs for dirt cheap on Ebay.
