VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.

Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.

Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in U.S. gas stations. As police fight the thieves and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

Hi

It’s crazy how just a small portion of stolen oil is giving so much revenue for the cartels. Just imagine how much money this is world wide for the oil corps and how it’s just siphoned in the pockets of a few at end of day

At 2:18 that’s a good show of force and arms. But we know that’s all for show. What the military is really there for is for the protection of the cartel.

I don’t they just kill the cartel members instead of arresting them

Killing them wouldn't do much there is always somebody who can replace the leader and even if they do it would just cause a massive riot

Ismail Mustafa we have tried but their government is too corrupt. Cartels are baked into Mexican culture and offer the illusion of a life of power/money to a bunch of kids living in squalor. It really needs a be a ground up community effort with the Mexican people saying “Enough is enough”, you have rebel groups like the EZLN that the cartels leave alone and citizens arming themselves to protect their towns. They have had some small successes, but a village of old people or a rebel group in Chiapas can only do so much. Look at how many times el chapo escaped prison or evaded capture because he was tipped off. You also have the problem that since Mexico is essentially a Narco-State that as soon as you take out one cartel or its leader, you have about a dozen cartels or other members ready to take their place and they already have the built in infrastructure of all the low level members, crooked police/politicians looking to augment their crap pay and drug routes/manufacturing facilities up for grabs. A cartel is a lot like a government and when you eliminate the leaders of one, you see a drastic rise in violence as everyone fights for control.

Ismail Mustafa really? Ok. America is a self centered country, they only worried about their own country. Mexico government is manipulative by the cartel, cartels controls Mexico’s streets. They even buy Mexicans Marines soldiers because it’s better pay.

@dannyhyped 124 and why would someone make a treaty like that pretty stupid 🤷‍♂️

@Ismail Mustafa because there is a treaty or some type of document that says that the us cant control issues with mexico that goes with the cartels as well

This is America

Trump: no it's not
