Chris I 100% agree with you. My friends in elementary school and I would fight over these books. We were afraid of the stories but also addicted and hooked because of like you said “how wrong and eerie they felt” my first love of horror was my asshole mom making me watch Tim Burton’s sleepy hollow in theatres at age 8. Ever since then I was addicted to creepy horror although not gory slasher horror

Am I the only one that coudlnt get into it at all , I tought the directing was way too colorful and fast paced to create any kind of atmosphere almost no long shot to install fear or suspens. I tought it was a complete waste of time , the characters were bland and dumb.

pfft, i just watched The Autopsy of Jane Doe and it was just another by the numbers horror movie. they're looking through a peep hole trying to find the monster. Gee, i wonder whats gonna happen next? exactly what ur thinking is gonna happen. The dialogue is not great either. earlier on, the father and son keep switching roles from who's the believer of the occult and who is not. the son earlier on tells the father that something supernatural is going on. a few minutes later, the father tells him that (spoilers) she's still alive. the son then yells that that's not possible. no shit, didn't you already establish that something supernatural is happening? why is the father the believer now and you're not? they kept going back on forth for a bit in the beginning. and there's lots of dialogue that felt...stupid. like early 90's horror stupid. really surprised Chris thought this was good. it was just sooo, been there, seen that. it's not thrash, but definitely not in the "good" category.

It was so dumb!!

I think Stuckmann and I are of similar mind on this one.

This was done well and on a scariness level I'd put it at about "Trick R' Treat" level as far as how young a person should be before watching it. The resolution is something we've seen many times, but with competent directing and performances it's a cut above those (similar to "Hereditary," which had almost nothing original in it but was done well).

It was solid enough that I was not surprised the Guillermo del Toro's name was attached, but wasn't nearly what it would have been had he taken the reins.

The one dis I would give the flick was the steady drip of politics/social commentary throughout. It was entirely unnecessary and added nothing to the film. The back-story that Stuckmann referred to toward the end could have still been done without all the anti-war, anti-Nixon, most-white-people-are-racist items which added absolutely nothing to the movie. Seriously, they played pretty much no role in the development of the actual story.

I'd probably have to go B-/C+, but I'm jaded from the scores of streaming movies that are nothing but crap acting, day-for-night shooting and horrible sound/music.

I'm the same with horror and didn't like what they did to Goosebumps. Goosebumps u can look up on here and it is 100 times more creepy and they made it into a 5 year olds movie. ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK was scarier than half the trash they do now. I want to see this so hope it didn't suck... We must be close in age. I liked JANE DOE so now I'm real excited wooo

The characters were bland and boring. The kid with the Pale lady was so annoying. Plus the jock wasn’t a right fir for a Jock. Lol

I found out these stories on audio disk when I was in elementary school but I love these books and they are scary. But great review Chris.

I personally didn't care for the movie. [Spoilers] I didn't see a point with the girl being terrorized by her family and was locked in a room where she wrote these stories. In my head i was thinking "why". I also didn't care for the fact that these stories weren't being told. Just got straight to the point of the scare in no relation to the book. The girl just reads a piece of it and they go off trying to stop it and thats it. I kinda thought that it was gonna be like VHS where someone's reading these stories in this house they're exploring maybe and it takes you as the viewer to the story from there or something. (Just my opinion of course)

So a movie with little story but never boring? How? At least this is a massive step up from most horror films.

It was disappointing. Like an Afterschool Special.... 2/5.

Love your shirt.

It's a good movie, but I don't like the ending.

I kinda wish the movie had kept some of the less fatal stories, like the toe lady could've been replaced with cemetery soup for a nice anti-climax.

I think you should make the piano version of the intro in the actual intro, every time!! Sounds very professional

The ending seemed kinda like sequel bait to me. I honestly wouldn't mind a sequel. Overall a pretty good movie.

What about the stuff?

fucking hated this movie so much

Meh. It was boring. Very Cliche. Character literally said "you don't read the book, the book READS YOU!" eye roll

Sicko Gamer I found a lot of the dialogue to be lacking as well

I'm in the same boat Chris Ithe books were apart of my childhood too

Funny how now, since the movie is out, everybody somehow read these books as children! LMFAO, I was told about these books about 15 years ago from a couple of friends who actually did have them as children, I had never heard about them before that. Interesting though how NOBODY I told after that was even remotely familiar with them. I call bullshit on all you fuckers claiming you read these as children. I'd love to see your original copies or at least a modicum of proof.

Great review as always. I don’t really watch a lot reviews but I always know you’ll give a good review without spoilers and you’re not pretentious about your opinions.

At the end of the day we all payed to watch a KID'S horror movie so like the B is accacceptable

I felt like Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark was like the child version of Final Destination. Like one of them is next on death’s list but none of the deaths are gory or super disturbing.
