The rise of competent do-it-all gravel bikes has raised the question, can one bike be your only bike? With two wheelsets, different tyres and a modern clutch derailleur groupset with disc brakes, on paper it seems more than capable of mountain biking, gravel riding and road racing.

Do you have one bike to do it all?

YES one single bike for daily commuting and everithing, it's a surly crosscheck very humble looking but a road training wheelset lets me fly and enjoy roads while 35mm Hutchinson Override tires allows me to go on trails and long endurance outings in comfort.
Only one wheelset and tire set imposes this kind of CX/gravel tires with a smooth center band. The key is that pressure tuning allows superb change in yield and traction between 7 and 3bar.
I stuck to Vbrakes for the sake of not attracting thieves and keeping price to a minimum.
So not only my bike is a do it all that I enjoy everyday it is also a cheap bike that does not stand out too much (once stickers are removed) in the crowd of city bikes.
However I am not racing at all, so this video is great to me as it confirms my approach remains valid up to much higher performance level given a bigger budget.

Yes I have its Hybrid/Cross bike Cross Crossbow and I am happy with it.
It was cheap when I bought it used, but when I converted it to XT 100% it is worth a few times more 😎
It has Shimano 770 tripple group with 9 speed on the casette.
Smallest chainwheel of 22T on front and biggest 32T in back.
Tires are 700x35c It can go pretty fast on road and can climb a pretty steep uphill roads with asphalt or without it.

WTF you are doing with WD40 close to disc brakes???

Is there any difference between gravel bike frame and road bike frame? If not, the difference is just clearance width of frame? I want to know the differences in weight or stiffness or strength... etc.

I do really love bikes... but I am a PhD student, and I also love my family.. and sleeping.. I cannot really handle more than 2 bikes.. my time trial bike, and my road bike, Sold off my gravel bike because I just can't afford to spend time riding gravel then cleaning... after every single dirty gravel ride.. so If i get the craving for gravel, first I remember back to the last time I cleaned my bike after gravel, and then I do a trainer ride instead.

cool bike!

Now all i want to see is a gravel bike with standart "all seasons" tires, not slick too skinny tires, not fat cross tires either going against amateur-semipro level road bikers on the street that is my reality. i want something that can deal with rough terrain 30-40% of the time and keep up with road bikes without having to change the set of tires.

We can never have too much bikes, N + 1 is gospel truth!😆

So how much to get this kind of set up.

I have a 20 speed gravel bike and a fixed wheel road bike. I ended up putting road tyres on the gravel bike and riding the fixed off road. I don't do it for logic, I do it for fun.

tolles Video, den letzten Kommentar kann ich nur unterschreiben, besser ein Gravelbike und ein Roadbike als immer die Laufräder wechseln, excellent video!!

I'm thinking of a gravel bike but more for winter. Do it all winter bike.bit of off roading and winter miles with fatter tyres sounds good to me

More GCN shows with presenters testing out kit in actual races please! Was rooting for you Si!

Damn that orbea looks fine!

Precisely the conversation many of my mates have been having as we dip deeper into gravel rides. I have to think the bike makers are listening. I’m wondering if a Roubaix-type with two sets of wheels will replace my Tarmac and my Felt F85X. Thoughts?

WD-40 for chain lube? Internet experts be mad about it

Wouldn't WD40 dry the cogs and chain up?

Seems like a bad idea...

I disagree...changing wheel sets is changing the bike.

fun, informative, helpful vid. thanks. I am about to the pull the trigger on a Diverge.

I've always thought that it would be good to see gravel bike racing on Rallycross circuits

Gravel bike, the ultimate bike for touring, bike packing.

did you road race with 40mm wide tires?

How about putting a dropper on it for the off road riding?

I absolutely cringed at that WD-40......

I commute on my gravel/cross bike(set up for road). Could it be an only child? Sure. I’ve seen people riding a lot less. Would I be ok with that? No. A good road bike is a refined machine built to handle with precision on asphalt/concrete. A gravel or cross bike has to have some compromises to handle the differences in terrain encountered off road. You can’t fake/fudge a great road bike.

Fast and fun comes from within. How strong are You? Do the work log the MILES, and it's all fun and fast.... gear doesn't ever replace the love of being on the bike....

Great article. Thanks GCN.

I like the idea. I just bought a Momsen R355 gravel bike and I am waiting for my road rims to arrive. I will update you during
July 2019 on my findings.

Hi there 🤗
Great and interesting video 🤗

I’m thinking of getting a new bike, and a bike that can go as a commuter, a road bike and a light gravel/winter bike... A genuine do it all bike 🤔😇

I’m not looking for a full on gravel bike (for that a have my MTB)

But I’ve been looking at the Canyon Endurace AL Disc 7.0... it looks like the tire clearance allows for a 32c tyre which I think will work as a light gravel/winter tyre setup...

But will the bike be a good option? It comes with a Shimano 105 M7020 2x11 groupset (11/32 and 34/50)

Best Regards Jannik
