“When it premiered, “Cops” was one of the first reality television shows and it has been broadcasting continuously since 1989. In this video, we worked with the podcast “Running From Cops” to understand why the show has stayed on TV for so long. At the time it was selected for development by Fox executive Stephen Chao, the writer’s strike of 1988 had created a desire for unscripted television that didn’t require hiring union talent.

But once “Cops” was on the air, it was the vision of “Cops” creator John Langley that would make the show last. He understood that the show presented a new opportunity for law enforcement agencies and it was his approach to making “Cops” that has kept police interested in appearing on the show. While “Cops” no longer has the high TV ratings it garnered during the nineties, it has been a persistent presence on television and it has spawned several imitators, including the very popular show “Live PD”.

Like “Cops”, these shows use variations of a reality format developed by “Cops” that features police performing their daily duties. The stripped-down format has remained nearly the same since the show began in 1989 and during the thirty years since “Cops” has had the same agreement with police that agree to appear on the reality show.

To learn what that agreement is, make sure to watch the video above.

To learn even more about “Cops”, make sure to listen to “Running From Cops”: a podcast that investigates various aspects of “Cops” and examines its cultural impact on policing on America.

Oh vox, you always try to spin a story.

You start the story with a seed of truth (Cops starting around the writers strike), then spin it full mental as an anti police video.

I was actually about to be impressed by a Vox video then I saw how you turned it into liberal bull $h!t. So your saying that Cops is some sort of propaganda used by police departments to pull the wool over citizens eyes. You make me want to vomit. Y’all should go on a ride along with those boys one night and see the truth for yourself. Obviously I’m not expecting a reply from you. Y’all never seem to focus a rebuttal to any claim against your garbage videos.

+Mike Haun This is no mundane abuse of power. It's cowardice.

Also I've been tased because I refused to get out of the car because I was supposably speeding and in my state you don't have to get out of the car unless you're being arrested the officer then asked me if I wanted a resisting arrest charge and disorderly conduct charge so their abuse of power is ridiculous or if you have been speeding 25 or more miles per hour over the speed limit so by him not requesting but telling me I had to do so I told him I knew my rights and he pulled out his taser saying if I didn't get out by the count of three he was going to tase me and guess what happened I got tased to be honest with you I'd rather been maced tazing hurts very badly figured I'd share that story thanks for reading

all major media, including propaganda VOX, sports, politicians, corporations...are scripted&controlled by the world elite

The whole idea of Cops and shows like it is pretty insidious...like it could be used to get people comfortable with the the idea of a police state. It's quiet dystopian if you think about it.

A reporter once asked John Bunnell why they didn't show the times when the suspects got away, and then chided him for giving a false impression that the cops always caught the suspects. John Bunnell said, "The show is called COPS. Let the bad guys get their own show."
